<!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } –> Is it just me or has the world gone carbon emission mad? Yes we should all be doing our bit for the environment – low energy light bulbs, locally grown produce, less short haul flights – but not eating animals that are prone to a bit of wind – is this not just a step too far?
Well, the Government doesn’t seem to think so, with new menus being created that avoid ‘high carbon’ food like meat from the humble but windy sheep, whose tendency to burp more than the next farm animal is causing a bit of trouble for the planet.
But it’s not just lamb in the firing line – greenhouse tomatoes and alcohol are also prone to high emissions. ‘Green’ food we shall be encouraged to eat will include potatoes, seasonal vegetables along with pork and chicken.
“ Changing our lifestyles, including our diets, is going to be one of the crucial elements in cutting carbon emissions,” said David Kennedy, chief executive of the Committee on Climate Change.
Kennedy has gone as far as to give up his beloved doner kebabs due to their lamb content.
In a recent study funded by the government, it was discovered to produce 2.2lb of lamb emitted 37lb of carbon dioxide. Sheep are such a no-no because their copious burps are full of the potent greenhouse gas, methane.
“ We are not saying that everyone should become vegetarian or give up drinking but moving towards less carbon intensive foods will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve health,” said Kennedy.
Alcohol is another big gassy offender, with 1.5% of the country’s greenhouse gases coming from the crops used to produce beer and whisky.
The government backed company, The Carbon Trust is collaborating with food and drink companies to work out the “carbon footprints” of different products. The results have sometimes been surprising, with Coca-Cola not half as guilty as Innocent’s healthy smoothies.
