Over half of all runners sustain an overuse injury to their lower extremity every year. Common overuse injuries in runners include runner’s knee, shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, ankle sprains, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis and generalized arch pain. A recent article in Sports Health reviewed the literature from 1980 through July 2008 for common mechanisms related to lower extremity running injuries. They found that the risk factors can be divided into two groups, the first is abnormal pronation and the second group is inadequate hip muscle stabilization.
