Why does my husband knee and foot get swollen?

My husband woke up and his foot was swollen and in so much pain was not able to walk on it.The next day he woke up the knee was swollen also not able to bend his knee.Foot still swollen and in so much pain it's being 3 days with the same pain.It is not the first time it has happened. What can we do he has being to a doctor had x-ray and cat scan done they say nothing everything ok. Please help?Hurts more in the cold
