what cause eyelids to get swollen

For the past few day one of my eyelids feels rather painfully uncomfortable.  Now i see that it is beginning to swell slightly and is a little bit reddish in colour.  I know that it is a common condition cause I see people from time to time with the same symptoms as mine but i would just like to know what causes that condition
