The Toys R Us Folks Must Have a Headache – Aqua Dots Recalled!

Posted Aug 26 2008 11:36pm

A few weeks ago I saw this press release:

Toys R Us Announces Hot Toy List for 2007 Holiday season

Curious, I clicked over expecting to see a list of toys I would never buy and I did.

The Fabulous 15 includes Aqua Dots Super Studio from Spin Master; ClickStart, My First Computer, from LeapFrog (NYSE: LF); Daisy Pocket Mod from Razor; EyeClops and XPV R-A-D Robotic Air Defense from Jakks Pacific (NASDAQ: JAKK); GeoTrax Rail & Road System, Smart Cycle Physical Learning Arcade System, and TMX Friends from Fisher-Price, a unit of Mattel (NYSE: MAT); Grand Walk-InKitchenfrom Step 2; Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock Game and Guitar Controller from Activision (NASDAQ: ATVI); Hannah Montana In Concert Collection Doll from Play Along; Made For Me MP3 Music Player from Playskool; Monopoly: Boutique Edition and Transformers Ultimate Bumblebee, from Hasbro (NYSE: HAS); and Shining Stars from Russ Berrie & Co.

Notice that first item on the list?
AQUA DOTS(TM) Super Studio from Spin Master(TM). You’ve probably seen it in stores. You’ve probably heard the buzz about what a great toy it is. You may not have seen the news:

Spin Master Recalls Aqua DotsChildren Became Unconscious After Swallowing Beads

(I’d link to Spinmaster’s website but, as I write this it’s down…crashed no doubt. Try www.aquadotsrecall.com but don’t expect to get through today at least.)

revised.... Apparently this toy made in China..duh! But, it's imported by a Canadian company. So, the problem doesn't just lay with US inspectors. ( There have been numerous recalls in Europe too! )

Did I just say, Canada? Ummm…this is a first world country right? If they don't control products imported, do they control products manufactured there better? Do we? Does anyone?

So, the avoid China strategy isn’t going to work this year, is it? Now what? Avoid toys? Maybe.

Since I’ve been writing about toys, recalls, blah, blah for a few months now, here’s some posts and particularly comments from my readers with some ideas.
