kidneys?

When I was young I got very sick and was rushed to the ER.
It was discovered that I have four Kidneys complete with four ureters, one which was badly infected. My infected ureters was then surgeicaly removed and replaced with an artificial one.
I havent had any major problems since, however Ive heard of a few other people with extra kidneys and some wierd conditions resulting from them.
Can anyone tell me more about how the kidneys function, or possible side effects/conditions that could result from a situation like this?
