I am a college senior that is currently enrolled in a
global health class at the University of Utah. This
semester we have talked a lot about malaria and the
global affect this disease has on people throughout
the world. One place that I found a lot of infomative
information was on a website entitled
globallearning.org. I thought the malariea module
was extremely interesting. Here are a few of my
thoughts about the module as well as what I
learned and how I plan to implement it. I had no
idea that 40% of the world's population is still at
risk to develop the disease. I also didn't know that
sleeping under mosquito nets was as successful as
it proved to be, especially for young children. The
module taught me a lot about the origin of malaria
and how it affects people. It was interesting to
learn that it has a relatively long incubation period
and depending on the specific form a person
contracts their incubation period and symptoms
can be different. The module also discussed
successful ways different countries have
implemented their own public health campaigns
to prevent malaria cases and create awareness
about the deadly disease. I will definitely use what
I learned in this module in my future career by
becoming more aware of the diseases that still
affect parts of the world. I think in any public health
career it is important to know about the world as a
whole rather than just what is affecting people in
the United States. I also will use this knowledge by
taking what worked in other public health programs
across the world and implementing them into
programs I might someday be a part of. All in all it
was a very informative module and I learned a lot.
