Cleansing and Detoxing...should you or shouldn't you?

Posted Feb 01 2008 6:21pm 1 Comment
Since I'm not known as a person who beats around the bush, I'll give it to you straight...don't even go there.

I'll bet I can guess what you're thinking. "But everyone's doing it, so it must be helpful, right?"

Wrong.

Sure the persuasion to try these products sounds good, perhaps even logical.

We all are aware of the potential hazards of some of the artificial ingredients used in processed foods, not to mention pesticide residues and other chemicals that are found.

So, it makes sense that we should try and reduce our chances of getting some dreadful disease as a result of ingesting these toxic substances. Which, to some, means taking special pills, doing colonic cleanses and the like.

Right?

Wrong again.

There is one thing proponents of these diets, pills and cleanses are forgetting, and that is the incredible defenses that we have already been equipped with in our own bodies, the most natural protection against these dreaded foes possible. Your body doesn't need any extra help in this regard!

Scientists have found no benefit whatsoever to these Hollywood-made- famous detoxification rituals, and there are some very serious potential side effects, most notably a perforated colon, infections, and fluid and electrolyte imbalances which could possibly lead to heart failure.

Don't be fooled by what is popular!

Researchers have found that common sense strategies like drinking
more water, eating more fruits and vegetables and getting more sleep
at night does a better job (and less expensive, I might add).

Ayurveda recommends seasonal fastings, but I think it's more up the alley that you're recommending, as far as eating lots of kidgeree and vegetables and drinking lots of water. I think dietary mindfulness, especially in the form of seasonal fasts, can help bring more awareness to our eating habits and dependencies. I find things like the lemonade diet to be disturbing and unhealthy and likely to give someone a horrid overgrowth of yeast in their digestive systems.

Also-healthy detoxing can be done through particular yoga sequences that help to stimulate the organs and balance the hormones.
