Milk?

Posted Nov 05 2009 10:02pm
Last night as I waited in line at Pluto's to pay for my vegan dinner (grilled veggie sandwich on sourdough and a side of butternut squash), the girl behind me asked for a glass of milk. This was strange for a variety of reasons:
1. The girl was thin, had ordered a salad (minus any meat), and thus seemed to be eating a healthy dinner.
2. She made sure to tell the server that she did not want skim!
3. This was no small glass, but a pint sized glass (16 or 20 oz depending on how you measure)!
4. Her dinner partner was making fun of her as well so maybe she knows that it is really weird to be in San Francisco and ordering a huge glass of hormones and pus to go alongside a relatively healthy dinner.
5. I've never seen anything like this before.
6. I am still kind of in shock when a grown up orders a sugar soda to accompany a meal so imagine my surprise to see someone (who doesn't look straight out of the midwest or south) order the milk of another species.

I was not alone in my shock. Edward commented on it multiple times as well.

And, there was no indication of the milk being organic.

Perhaps, having a very low (physical) tolerance for cow products is why I cannot fathom how someone could not only enjoy but digest cow's milk. A pint of milk for me would equal a long night of excruciating stomach pain.

And on a similar note, I find it crazy how so many food bloggers attempt to promote healthy eating but will drink milk like it's no big deal. I understand that "foodies" will eat animals in many forms but to support factory farming and the dairy industry when it is abusive to cows, responsible for veal production, harmful to the environment, toxic to our bodies, and provides misinformation left and right seems a little strange to me.
