red/purple grape juice same benefits as wine?

Posted by Michelle V.

Does drinking red/purple (concord grapes usually) grape juice have the same benefits as drinking a glass of red wine?

Hi Michelle,

Check out this interesting article on CNN.com; according to Jane Freedman, "Purple grape juice contains the same powerful disease-fighting antioxidants, called flavonoids, that are believed to give wine many of its heart-friendly benefits... Grape juice can also lower the risk of developing the blood clots that lead to heart attacks."

You can also buy flavonoid vitamin pills at Whole Foods or a vitamin store.

Bummer. Wine tastes WAY better!
thanks! this is a great article. I love purple grape juice with fizzy water.
Lela, you can still enjoy your red wine. This just provides people another option to get the same great benefits.
I'm starting to take grape juice for medicinal purposes (chloresterol). Someone told me that for maximum benefit it should be 'red' grape juice, not 'purple'--as in concord grapes. . I haven't been able to pin down the difference since the terms tend to be used interchangably. Any factual advice appreciated.
