I can hear the happy music playing in my head - just as it plays after a feel-good movie… the latest American Dietetic Association “Nutrition and You” trends survey shows that consumers rated registered dietitians as THE MOST CREDIBLE information sources.
Out of a list of information sources the respondents were asked how credible they believed each was. Registered dietitians were listed as the most credible at 78 percent.
However, grocery stores and food manufacturers were not rated highly, appearing at the bottom of the list with a rating of 11 percent and nine percent respectively.
Who hoo! 78%… Sounds to me like dietitians coast to coast are proving to consumers that they are worth their salt!
Registered Dietitians (RD): Proven Professional Expertise and Excellence
Registered Dietitians have completed academic and experience requirements established by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, ADA’s credentialing agency, including a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and an accredited pre-professional experience program. RDs must successfully complete a rigorous professional level exam and must maintain ongoing continuing education to maintain their credential. Some RDs hold advanced degrees and additional certifications in specialized areas of practice.
Companies - large and small - whether you want to provide corporate wellness, workshops, health fairs, or embark on a nutrition-related project (from PR to a new health tech gadget) - make sure you have a a registered dietitian on board!
Individuals - hopefully your state has a licensure law (most states do). They are looking out for you making sure nobody without proper credentials and certification is trying to provide services outside of their scope of practice. Trust me, people try to break state laws all the time. So do your homework and look for the “RD” credential. You can search ADA’s website for a nutrition professional, but they may not have all RDs in your state.
