Soy-based foods can affect sperm count

Posted by Kristen D. Patient Expert

Foods that are healthy for men and women alike may not be so advantageous when it comes to men¹s sperm count. According to an article I saw on MSNBC.com, eating half a serving a day of soy foods could significantly lower a man¹s sperm count. A study compared the intake of soy foods like tofu and soy milk by a group of men to their individual sperm counts. The men who ate the most soy-based foods had 41 million less sperm per millimeter than men who ate no soy foods. However, the article explains that the study was not sufficient to suggest that soy intake could induce infertility.

Also, according to the article, researchers found that the association between the consumption of soy foods and lowered sperm count was stronger in overweight men, perhaps suggesting that hormones are playing a role. Click this following link to read more about that finding.
