Swapping Your Kid's Unhealthy Snacks

Posted by Nirmala N.

So your kids are all about the junk food, eh? Handing them a bag of celery and carrots might not be the best solution to fixing unhealthy eating habits at an early age, but you can try faking it instead.

If your kids want brownies, for instance, you can try for fudge-flavored ice pops, which are approximately 40 calories, with zero grams of fat (as opposed to 240 calories and 10 grams of fat for the average brownie).

And here's a healthy recipe for homemade chocolate pumpkin mini-muffins that your kids are bound to love.

Ingredients:

• Vegetable oil cooking spray
• 1 box (18.25 ounce) devil's food cake mix
• 1 can (15 ounce) pureed pumpkin
• 1 mini-muffin tins

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Spray the mini-muffin tins with cooking spray; then mix cake mix and pumpkin in a large bowl until completely moist. Fill each muffin cup with 2 tablespoons mixture and bake for 10 to 17 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from pan to wire rack. Two muffins contain approximately 91 calories and 1.5 grams of fat, along with 40% RDA of vitamin A.

I've weaned my kids off trans-fats and most high-fat food, but they still love their salty and sweet snacks. These little muffins sound really good, and I'm going to try them. Thanks!
My older son LOVES those muffins. Does anyone else have some yummy healthy recipes like that (that are easy enough for kids to make themselves even?)
