I haven't seen it myself, but you may have. The Corn Refiners Association is very upset at the consumer rejection of High Fructose Corn Syrup, so much so that they have committed an entire ad campaign to promoting their product. The commercials paint a portrait of consumers who are jumping on an anti-HFCS bandwagon without knowing the facts, stuttering and appearing ignorant when asked what is wrong with HFCS. Apparently the true facts, according to the Corn Refiners Association are that HFCS is made from real corn (so I guess this makes is good for you) and it's "ok in moderation".
Moderation. They used the nutrition slogan against us. That's below the belt.
Watch the commercials, and see more of the propaganda here:
www.sweetsurprise.com. It's really pretty, with bright colors, and smiling consumers just loving their HFCS.
The good news is that the Corn Refiners Association is worried. And maybe the moderation slogan would be true, if HFCS wasn't in EVERYTHING, not just sweetened juices and popsicles.
Just so we can prove that we are in fact educated, if anyone offers you a delightful pitcher of flourescent pink juice (as in the commercial), and you reject it due to the HFCS content, remember these talking points:
1. HFCS promotes fat synthesis at a higher rate than table sugar. (
learn about this here )
2. HFCS does not promote insulin production and therefore stays in the blood longer than table sugar.
3. HFCS is often made with genetically modified corn, but you can't tell, and it's not labeled.
4. HFCS, "made from corn", is helping to skyrocket our Omega-6 levels so that our Omega-3/Omega-6 ratio is out of whack. (
