
With cool weather around the corner and my exercise regime picking up pace, I find that I’m starting to day-dream more and more about comfort food, which for me includes a nice, juicy, medium-rare steak.
I live in a suburb of New York City and try as I may, I cannot find grass-fed beef in my neighborhood. Mind you, what I consider my neighborhood is a 1 mile radius around my apartment, as I have no car (street parking here is a nightmare!).
I have to imagine that most people do not have easy access to grass-fed beef so I started researching the best cuts grain-fed beef.
Until I can convince my local grocers and butchers to carry grass-fed beef, at least it has been relatively simple to find anti-biotic and hormone-free grain-fed cuts.
Based on a 3 oz serving, here are the six lean options:
Top Sirloin: 156 calories; 4.9 g fat; 1.9 g saturated fat
95% Lean Ground Beef: 139 calories; 5.1 g fat; 2.4 g saturated fat
Bottom Round Roast: 139 calories; 4.9 g fat; 1.7 g saturated fat
Eye Round Roast: 144 calories; 4 g fat; 1.4 g saturated fat
Top Round Roast: 157 calories; 4.6 g fat; 1.6 g saturated fat
Sirloin Tip Steak: 143 calories; 4.1 g fat; 1.6 g saturated fat
