In case you did not hear the news over the weekend, Whole Foods Market issued a voluntary recall of fresh ground beef sold from June 2 through August 6 because the beef might be contaminated with E. coli bacteria. The beef in question came from Coleman Natural Beef, a processing plant that had been responsible for another nationwide recall for E. coli contamination earlier this summer.
In a press release Whole Foods stated that Coleman had assured them that none of the beef sent to Whole Foods was related to the contaminated beef.
This is especially bad news for people who pay extra for meat at markets like Whole Food expecting a higher level of safety. Annys Shin at The Checkout blog ( Washington Post ) warns that we shouldn't be lulled into a false sense of security when purchasing organic meat.
Coleman Natural Beef is one of the largest providers of "natural" beef, raised from birth without the use of antibiotics or growth-promoting hormones and fed a 100 percent vegetarian diet. This is a segment of the food industry I would like to see grow so I am terribly disappointed to hear that Coleman did not uphold safety standards.
