Posted Mar 03 2009 2:24pm

You must have heard of cardiovascular exercises but are confused as they are advocated for almost anything including weight loss programs. As such, you can take up cardiovascular exercises if you have excessive bad cholesterol (LDL), if you are a diabetic, to mitigate the risk of developing coronary heart disease or in general, your overall health and well-being with your eyes closed.

First Things First: How Do You Define Cardiovascular Exercises

First of all “cardiovascular exercises” covers any or all the activities that involve continuous workout of your heart and respiratory system and make your heart and lungs stronger. In simple words, with cardiovascular exercises, you will be working the large muscle groups of your lungs and legs & arms and thus develop a control over the build up of cholesterol and fat in your body.

Choosing Appropriate Cardiovascular Exercises

The beauty of cardiovascular exercises is in their variety that works on your lungs and heart. Although all cardiovascular exercises largely work on your lungs, heart and circulation system, atypically it cannot be taken as a case of “one size fits all”. Another point to keep in mind before choosing a cardiovascular exercise is that of the amount of exercises that you can physically take without overexerting yourself. You will need to give a thought to your needs, lifestyle and etc before deciding on one. Remember the thumb rule while choosing them, that you can’t go jogging a mile straight from a totally sedentary lifestyle. Walking suits all bills, which can be extended and graduated over time after you grow in endurance to jogging or swimming. If you are playing soccer or tennis, I assume that walking and jogging to have already formed a part of your warm-up routine.

Are Cardiovascular Exercises Enough to Lose Weight?

There is probably no one that has yet to hear that cardiovascular exercises work wonders for obese persons. With so much to its credit, weight loss, however, still depends on the level of your obesity. Furthermore, if yours is an aged fat or you are really obese, you will do yourself a world of good by adding a few more weight loss exercises to your routine in addition to the cardiovascular exercises.

Focusing The Cardiovascular Exercises On Weight Loss
No doubt the cardiovascular exercises are wonderful for overall well being as it improves metabolism by leaps and bounds. However, if weight loss is what prompted you to take this up, you should particularly keep your focus on exercising those parts more where there are higher fat deposits to lose weight fast. Your thighs, hips and stomach get exercised better with cycling and swimming rather than walking or jogging which have their own drawbacks. If you have access to stationary cycle or elliptical exercising equipment, it is equally good for you.
