I recently became aware of a new phenomenon in Senior Citizen social circles. Many events now require adherence to an important rule: No one can talk about the prescription medications they are taking. The premise being if one person started talking about it, the entire event would soon become consumed by the topic.
I like this rule and I think it should apply not just to seniors, but across the board. I’m tired of hearing about cholesterol meds, anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills.
This got me to thinking, is everyone on something? Are my wife, my son and myself the only ones not in the clutches of Big Pharma?
I decided to conduct one of my street corner surveys. I stood on the corner of 53 rd Streetand Third Avenuein NYC and asked 100 people if they took at least one prescription medication a day. The oldest respondent was 80. The youngest 16. of the one hundred I queried, 62 took at least one pill a day. The 80 year old was on Lipitor. He told me his doctor said it was just a precaution.
The 16 year old said everyone he knows is on something.
Of the 38 not taking anything, all responded YES when asked if any extended family members are taking prescription meds. (I answered YES to this as well. My father has been mindlessly prescribed Lipitor for years, his doctor falling back on the same excuse as given to the above-mentioned 80 year old. My mother, in the depths of Alzheimers, is still being prescribed Aricept. Trust me- nothing can help my mother now but her neurologist continues to push the drug.)
Pharma Reps push these pills and potions at such intensity that they give snake oil salesmen a bad name (Just for the record, snake oil was a proven to treat ailments and pain. It was the medical and pharmaceutical communities that coined the phrase many years ago, just as they try today to demonize natural remedies.)
Doctors now pull out their pens and prescription pads with the grace of a ballet dancer and pharmacies fill them and only rarely tutor (as required by law) on the side effects and dangerous interactions.
