Do you drink milk?

Posted Oct 07 2008 7:19pm

As a kid I would say I drank milk anywhere from 3 - 5 glasses a day.  I drank more milk than water as a kid.  Especially with cookies after school.  Was milk a better product in the 60's and 70's ?  I do remember milk tasting better as a kid than now.  Today I do not enjoy milk, except if its organic.  Milk today tastes weird.  I can't explain the taste, I know it does not taste the same as when I was a loving milk kid.
Let's take a look into the dairy products.  First of all, did you know dairy farmers receive $ 7 billion in federal subsidy.  My question is why?  Especially since most dairy farmers are actually corp. farmers.
We will examine the vicious cycle of our dairy products.
Did you know milk products are one of the leading contributors to sickness in our country?  Milk can cause allergies, gas, constipation, cancer, heart disease, obesity, and yes osteoporosis.  There have been numerous studies that have advocated milk is more likely to cause osteoporosis than prevent the disease.  The reason given for this conclusion  is the amount and type of protein from milk (casein) actually causes a loss of calcium in the bones.

A bigger concern is the health of our cows. The average cow can produce up to 10 pounds of milk a day. Today we also super size our cow's milk production.  Super Size cow's now produce 100 pounds of milk today. Wondering how they can increase their production? Do you think cows are getting bigger because of evolution , no, its called hormone therapy.  The hormone taken  oops given to our cows  is called bovine growth hormone (BHG).  Lets stop and think for a moment, this past summer did our congress have  a special  hearing concerning baseball and steroids/growth hormones.  Yes, we question an athlete for injecting hormones but its alright for our cows to be injected with hormones. In a way we are taking growth hormones on a daily bases, from the cow's milk products. Interesting!
The hormone bovine increases the size of the cow's udders.  By the way the udders are drag on the ground.  Guess what, now the cow has to be given antibiotics to control infections.  OK lets reexamine our milk products, we will receive daily growth hormones and antibiotics.  Great!  I'm feeling sso healthy.
Did you know the average age of a female in the U.S. to start menarche is 10 years old?  In other countries that do not use the bovine growth hormone the average age for menarche is 15 years old.  Our females are also developing larger breasts at a younger age.
What about our cows?  Well the average life span for a cow is 20 - 25 years but dairy cows only live on the average 4 - 5 years.  Does congress care about the average milk drinker or the cow?
Where does the problem come from?  It's called ADA, yes another strong lobby group.  The ADA pulled a full court press for our government to subsidize overproduction of milk.  What did we do with the overproduction of milk, went to our school lunch program.
Its important that we educate ourself concerning our food system.  We can not count on the government to protect our health or anything else.  Yes lobby groups have a strong hold on the government but one thing we are forgetting, the larger lobby group is our society, the consumer.  We can move mountains if we want to.  We need to educate our society and investigate our food source and demand a change through our buying power.  We are a powerful society!
