Has spring finally sprung?

Posted Apr 05 2009 11:51pm
Today was glorious! For the first time this year, we had a beautiful, warm sunny day. Don't get me wrong, we've had lots of sun...but today was so warm and at times actually hot! It was great.

I didn't exactly feel like running when I got up, but I knew I'd feel bad wasting the sunny morning if I didn't. Because it looked nice out, I braved it in just a pair of capri pants and a tank top. It was a bit chilly at first, but as soon as I got warmed up, I felt fine.

I decided to head out with the 10 km clinic this morning as they were planning a nice 8 km run. Quite a few of our runs have been through the flats or around the lagoon trails lately and today was no different. Except, to get some extra distance we headed a bit further east first and hit the trails from a different side. It was great because we entered the park where they have nice paved trails and it was like running in a whole new city for me. It's amazing how many new places there are to run in your own city that you have no idea about!

Anyhow, the temp was great and the run was flat, so it was a pregnant runner's dream. I ran alongside a new mom for a little while and we chatted about running after the little one arrives. We talked a bit about jogging strollers etc. - just another thing I'll need to think about eventually! Personally, I think pushing a stroller along while running is going to be tough. I have a hard enough time propelling just myself along, let alone a buggy and baby as well!

So by the time we finished today's run, we had gone nearly 9km. I actually started my Garmin a bit late though, so my numbers are a bit short...
  • Total distance: 8.36 km
  • Total time: 1:02:03
  • Average pace: 7:25/km

When I look at the numbers I see that I am pretty much consistently running in the 7:15+ per km range. It feels like just the right pace for me and my current state. I think it's interesting because I am now running slower than my first half marathon pace, which was 7:11 per km. My last half marathon before pregnancy I was around 6:25-ish per km...so it's interesting to see how things change.

After I got home I decided to spend some time outside and dug around in the front garden for a few hours. While our cold winter unfortunately killed some of my perennial shrubs, my ground covers seem to be thriving, so I spent ages cutting it all back and revealing some soil again! I was pretty pooped and it was actually quite hot, but it felt nice to finally be outside and feel some sun on my back!
