Ah July, time of gorgeous days and sleepless nights. It's already supposed to be in the mid-90s here the next few days-- we don't usually get weather that hot until August. 80 degrees is about perfect for me. Over 90 and it's hard to sleep. Last night I was too hot, too stressed, over carbed (more on that in a minute) and M. was snoring a bit. Thus, another less than stellar night's sleep. I'll tell you a secret though-- I do not miss going to work so far!
I survived my first day of biochemistry. I was surprised to find that Bastyr has airconditioning, since not all of the buildings at the University of Washington do (not as common in Seattle since we only get maybe 2-3 weeks a year when you really need it). I was actually in need of my sweater. That probably won't be the case tomorrow when it's 95 though!
I got off to a bad start by going to the orientation lunch. I've already mentioned Bastyr only serves vegetarian food. Unfortunately, vegetarian food for a big group= pasta and bread. Starch city! I should have just eaten the small salad and left the rest, but I had rice pasta with tomato sauce (the other choice was ravioli which had cheese in it) and half a piece of bread and half a cookie and salad. And the worst part is I wasn't even really hungry! So by the time my class started I had a slight headache. I remedied this half way through the class with the blended salad I brought.
The lecture goes at a break-neck pace and four hours is an extremely long time! We get a ten minute break every hour at least, but it's still a lot. Good thing I'm already used to three hour lectures from anatomy. We have an exam every Friday on the stuff we learned Monday and Wednesday. It's very very fast. After I study today maybe I'll have a better idea of how scared I should be. Yesterday's pasta incident did remind me I have to be focused on my diet too-- my brain does not function well on poor food choices and I don't have time for food hang-overs during this class!
Today I actually managed to work out for 45 minutes-- 25 minutes weights and 20 min intervals on the elliptical (though those were so hard I almost had to stop after each hard part!) I'm doing last Spring's full body workouts which are my favorite, though I need to start doing heavier weights pretty soon. It annoys me how many times I have had to lose the same 10 pounds. It's really getting boring!
