PLANT A GARDEN

Posted Jun 23 2009 6:55pm

There aren’t many things left in this life where there are no negatives attached. Planting and cultivating your own garden is one of the few.

Clinically, gardening has been shown to reduce your blood pressure. It’s also great exercise and a wonderful opportunity to absorb Vitamin D through natural sunshine.

Therapeutically, planting your garden is a fantastic way to be relaxed yet fully engaged at the same moment. As your bare hands move through the soil (Please! Get your fingernails dirty) and you plant the seeds into the earth, you are as connected to the land and nature as one could possibly be.

Economically, the start up costs are nominal and the money saved from growing your own vegetables is substantial. Sounds like an excellent business model.

Despite the overwhelming clinical, therapeutic and economic positives, the true benefits are nutritional. You will saturate your body in a diet of primarily home grown fruits and vegetables that will almost overwhelm you with vital vitamins, minerals and other life-giving nutrients. You will be in complete control of the entire supply and transit chain. You can supply you and your family on demand and transport from garden, to kitchen to plate in minutes.

Be sure to put aside a portion of your garden for your children or grandchildren. You can be the investor, supervisor and troubleshooter, but leave the day to day operations of that portion of the garden to the kids. Set the example and let them watch you work the land. (Even if it’s a small urban garden) Soon they will start imitating your actions.

Almost everyone has room for a garden. In the most restricted of spaces, plant organic herbs such as basil, rosemary, parsley and oregano on your window sill.

Be creative: Do you have a friend with some land, or an older relative with a garden who would love your companionship? Municipalities and private communities are devoting space to gardens. So are schools and clubs. Even prisons!

Outdoor space as small as a patio, balcony or terrace will do. But be forewarned, once you get started, the call of the land is among the most powerful forces in all of nature.

Buy organic seeds. If you need to fertilize or add plant food, be sure it’s organic. Go and enjoy the fruits and vegetables of your labor.
