I ask all of you a question: What does our issues in education, interpreting, captioning and the relay all have in common?
Just think about this for a moment. What do our issues all have in common?
EQUAL ACCESS TO COMMUNICATION
Joey Baer agreed with me on his vlog (comment 31) that we all need to have an unified public relations strategy to get our message out to the hearing world. So I am proposing a very simple public relations campaign – Communication Access Now (CAN).
A positive, short and sweet message. People will only have to glance at it, and understand the core of our issues. Because that’s what is at the core! The equal access to communication.
We are denied equal access to communication in education when parents are lied to about American Sign Language being a failure for the deaf and that cochlear implants are only the way to help deaf children learn. That is a lie, and denies us equal access to communication. One size does not fit all.
We are denied equal access to communication in our everday lives when we cannot get a qualified interpreter when it’s needed.
We are denied equal access to communication when businesses refuse to accept our relay calls or when a television show isn’t captioned, or when there’s no ticker screens in public transportation areas so we are aware of what is going on.
So let’s all of us echo this message until the politicians and the masses hear and understand us:
COMMUNICATION ACCESS NOW!
EDIT: I replaced the word grievances and deleted one sentence based on Dennis’ suggestion. Feel free to make other suggestions to refine the message.
