Our Government Help? Yeah Right!

Posted Nov 04 2009 10:03pm

I’ve been reading blogposts all over DeafRead on various issues, but they all have a common theme: our opposition has more money than us; our government can help us with this; let someone else take care of this problem!

Folks, I’ve come to face a brutal reality. The government doesn’t give a damn about us because we’re not vocal enough nor donate enough money to impact the political landscape. I filed a complaint with Michigan Department of Civil Rights a year ago, and they told me the doctor violated my civil rights. But is he being penalized for it? No. MDCR at first tried to tell me that there was a special law for doctors exempting them from accommodating me. I am fortunate enough to have a mother who works for an attorney part-time, so she asked for the citation of that law. There was none. MDCR lied to me and is continuing to lie to me!

Even with my mother’s legal savvy, I could not reach a settlement agreement through MDCR with my eye doctor, Dr. Bruce Dragoo. So now, I have to hire an attorney and go after him, because my mother isn’t an attorney. They will only listen to attorneys, apparently.

So you know what folks? I think it’s time for us to start donating money to organizations like NAD and scream at the top of our lungs that we will no longer tolerate our civil rights being violated by anyone, especially the medical and legal establishment just because they’re richer and have more connections than we do. We need money to hire attorneys to slap some sense into people.

We can do this, folks. MoveOn.org proved grassroots advocacy is possible. So what are you waiting for? I’m so fed up that I’m going to join NAD and donate 10 bucks along with my membership money. That’s what I’m going to do, for starters. Just imagine 5 thousand of us donating 10 dollars each. That would come up to fifty thousand dollars.

Aidan Mack volunteered to donate her time and filmmaking talents to film ads for us. DeafChip, Dianrez and IamMine are willing to help Aidan. What are you all willing to do?
