Introduction to Skiing

Skiing originated as a practical way of getting from one place to another through snow. There are two main types of skiing, named after where they most likely originated. In Nordic skiing, originated in Scandinavia, the ski bindings are attached to the boot at the toes. Nordic skiing is often referred to as cross-country skiing. Alpine skiing, originated in the Alps, is often referred to as downhill skiing. In Alpine skiing, the ski binding attaches to the boot at both the toe and the heel. Telemark skiing is a bit of a hybrid. While Telemark is a style of downhill skiing, is typically referred to as a Nordic style because the heel of the boot is not bound to the ski.

Gear

The basic ski gear includes skis, ski boots, poles, goggles, and several layers of cold-weather clothes. These days, a ski helmet is becoming a relative staple as well. Typically, ski apparel consists of synthetic, non- cotton shirts, pants and underlayers, an outer, waterproof jacket or shell, and a pair of waterproof ski pants. Special, long, thick, non-cotton socks are typically worn underneath the ski boot.

There are a number of types of skis, geared toward different styles of skiing, terrain, conditions and abilities. Alpine skis are the most common, they're precise, fast and great for hard, groomed runs. These days, most alpine skis are made with a parabolic shape that makes balance and turning easier than on straight skis. These are especially good for beginners. Freeride, or powder, skis are typically wider and float over powder more easily. These are great for powder conditions. Freestyle skis are specially made for the different types of freestyle skiing (designed for tricks). Telemark skis are for, well, telemarking. Cross country skis are thin, light skis, which attach at the toe like telemark skis.
