what can cause tongue spasms that feel like electric shocks?

For about six weeks or so, I have had numbness on the left side of my face. About two to three weeks ago, I also started having spasms in my tongue, like little electric shocks. Almost like the old 9v battery on the tongue trick. My throat also spasms from time to time when I try to swallow. I have recently been diagnosed with connective tissue disease/lupus. Could this be related? Any possible answers would help.
