Say no to Splenda

Splenda came on the scene as a popular alternative to sugar and other non-calorie sweetener. It gained in popularity over time because of mass marketing towards dieters and diabetics who would be watching their sugar intake. It was (and is) promoted as a safe and convenient alternative sweetener and most importantly contains NO sugar–but is made from sugar–so must be good for you, right? WRONG! I remember learning in Nutrition class in massage school (I went to ASHA School of Massage–there is no comparison, in my eyes, in the Southeast for MT training) that Splenda contained a chemical make up comparable to chlorine. Splenda is an artificial sweetener that has become very popular based on it’s origin from sugar, and more notably, the claim that it has zero calories. Splenda also goes by the chemical name of sucralose. The simple fact that Splenda even has a chemical name should be the first sign of danger. (more…)
