Back lump

My dad has a lump on the top middle of his back.  It has grown over the past couple of months, and is raised quite far above the skin, and is red at the bottom but white at the top.  What could this be? Hope Ive put this in the right place, and Im giving the right info, I only found this website today! Thanks.
