DUI For Driving While High On The Rise

Posted Apr 09 2009 6:11pm

A lot of marijuana users often defend their drug of choice saying that Alcohol is legal and people drink and drive and kill people. While they may be right, it doesn’t mean they are innocent of driving while under the influence.

A recent study showed that driving while under the influence of Cannabis is just as dangerous (Perhaps I’m pushing it a bit) as driving while under the influence of alcohol.

I’d be lying if I told you that I have never driven under the influence of either alcohol or cannabis. I was young and stupid once, even though that’s not an excuse, I did a lot of things in my younger days that I’m not proud of. Driving while I was high was not fun the one time that I did it. I was very uncomfortable, scared and paranoid. Why did I do it anyway? Lack of good judgment, immaturity, too stupid to have a better reason besides I needed to get where I was going. I could go on, but you always look back on life and the stupid things you’ve done and ask yourself why.  I was very lucky that I didn’t hurt anyone with my irresponsible decisions. I probably couldn’t live with myself if I did hurt someone.

Ok, back on track. Here is a bit of what the study found.

Bergeron and colleagues asked 83 men, aged 17 to 49, about their driving history and observed them in driving simulators.

They found that 35 percent of the participants had been involved in one or more road crashes with material damage in the previous three years. Thirty percent admitted to using marijuana, and 80 percent of those said they drove under the influence of marijuana at least once in the previous year.

Driving under the influence of cannabis happens more often than you may think, it’s just that they aren’t reported as often, perhaps because people aren’t getting killed by the high drivers. That doesn’t make it right, nor does it make it a valid argument. Should marijuana be legalized. I don’t really don;t think so because I think it would create more problems than people may think.
