When you think of a fruit and/or yogurt smoothie you would think that your getting a tasty, yet healthy drink right? I like a good smoothie every now and then but you have to be careful of the source, especially if you’re not seeing them making it in front of you. You can make your own smoothies at home and you know exactly what you’re getting.
In Men’s Health Magazine January/February issue they told of a few things that the chain restaurants don’t want you to know, while they did some research in putting together one of their every so popular “Eat This-Not That” books, they found that Dunkin’ Donuts doesn’t totally disclose how much sugar they are putting in to their smoothies. If they did that they would probably lose some business, and god forbid they disclose any helpful information without being forced to do so.
Dunkin’ Donuts doesn’t want you to know that each of it’s medium-size fruit-and-yogurt smoothies packs at least 60 grams of sugar–More than four times the sugar in a frosted cake doughnut. The fruit purees used in the smoothies are mixed with liberal doses of sugar and/or high-fructose corn syrup.
60 grams! That’s about 5 tablespoons of sugar with about 45 calories per tablespoon (225 of sugar calories). That’s almost 1/8 th of your daily allowance of calories based on a 2000 calorie diet…in one shot! You think you’re drinking something healthy when you’re really just getting a load of sugar. If you can metabolize that then go for it, but that’s not the case with most people. Yeah, “ America Runs On Dunkin ” cause their all hopped up on sugar!
What’s kind of strange is that I found somewhat conflicting information on Men’s Health online where they said there is 100 grams of Sugar in the smoothies. Perhaps there is something lost in translation between the article in the magazine and the one online or I’m not reading it correctly. I tried to get more nutrition information off of DunkinDonuts.com but they seem to be “Updating” their nutrition page, however, Livestrong.com’s The Daily Plate listed a small 16 oz Dunkin Donuts Tropical Smoothie has having 71g of sugar and 360 calories. I bet they taste great, but as they say; ‘ eat it now, wear it later ‘.
Before you go holding a protest at your local Dunkin Donuts, let me also say that I have also seen some rather old reports saying that they planned on offering sugar free smoothies. It never hurts to do your own research on these subjects if you’re skeptical.
