Ex-NFLers May Be Prone to Dementia

Posted Sep 30 2009 10:14pm

Oops, the day after I post that NFLers aren’t necessarily at higher risk of heart disease because of their size ( Retired NFLers Not at Higher Heart Risk), I read a press release that says that these same football players have a higher rate of Alzheimer’s disease and other brain problems than the general population.

tombrady_nc The research was done by a telephone interview and depended on the ex-players responses to the questions posed by the investigators. It was not based on reviews of medical files or medical examinations. Researchers at the University of Michigan undertook a study for the NFL, but the study results haven’t been published in a peer-reviewed journal. These journals are considered the mainstay of research information, such as the Journal of the American Medical Association, or the Lancet.

Despite the study not being a medical one, the information is important because it is known that repeated head injuries put people at risk for disability. Of course, more research will be done and more definitive answers found.
