Gluten Free Beer

What the hell is Gluten and why’s it in my beer in the first place? Not many people know what gluten is, but if you suffer from the gluten intolerance

disease Celiac Disease then you are probably far too familiar with Gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye as well as some medicines and vitamins. People that have Celiac disease have to be very careful of what they eat or they can become very ill and suffer damage to the small intestine.

If a person with a peanut allergy also has a gluten allergy then it makes it kind of tough to go to the bars right? Not anymore. A lot of breweries have found alternative brewing ingredients to brew gluten free beer and make life a little bit easier for people that suffer from Celiac Disease. I love wheat beers so Celiac disease would break my heart. Here are some of the beers on the market that are gluten free.

Redbridge Beer from Anheuser-Busch is actually the only beer I have seen in the stores that advertises as Gluten Free. This is what sparked my interest in writing this post. Redbridge is made with Sorghum instead of wheat or barley. Sorghum seems to be the common alternative ingredient.

Hambleton Ales out of the UK makes a Gluten Free beer properly called “Toleration”. Toleration uses no malts in the brewing process and only uses hops and sugars. For their hops they use “ A blend of Cascade, Liberty, East Kent Goldings and Challenger hops. “.

The last one I found was New Grist out of Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. New Grist is also made with Sorghum and Rice Extract. You can find out more about New Grist at http://www.newgrist.com/.

Now I have no idea how these beers taste and I really don’t plan on trying for the fact that I’m not allergic to gluten and I enjoy Heineken. However, this is great for those that are allergic to gluten and still want to enjoy the great taste of beer.
