I know this is pretty much old news by now, but I thought I would touch base on it a little bit.
Hydroxycut, which has been on the market for quite awhile now has been the “Fat burner” of choice by many people. I took it at one time, many years ago when it still had Ephedra in it. Back then I took it for energy, not knowing that if I ate right, stopped smoking and got more exercise, I wouldn’t have an issue with energy. Once they stopped using Ephedra in it, it seemed as if Hydroxycut lost it’s kick for me. Shortly after anything with Ephedra was banned.

The recent recall of Hydroxycut products is not the first time the product from Iovate, the makers of the Muscletech brand, has been under scrutiny over this product. In 2003 they settled a false claims lawsuit for stating that Hydroxycut was “Clinically Proven” to burn fat. Iovate denied any wrongdoing.
Iovate, though voluntarily recalling their Hydroxycut product is still adamant that their product is safe because the cases of Hydroxycut being involved with people that had adverse health issues are few and far between compared to the number of people that use the product.
Iovate initiated a voluntary recall when it became aware that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s assessment of 23 reports about consumers having experienced liver-related problems, as well as a small number of published case reports, was different from Iovate’s analysis. On May 1, 2009, the FDA issued an advisory which states that, “Although the liver damage appears to be relatively rare, FDA believes consumers should not be exposed to unnecessary risk.”
The number of adverse event reports described by the FDA is small relative to the many millions of people who have used Hydroxycut products over the 7 years referenced by the FDA. Iovate’s own assessment of the potential risk associated with the use of these products differs from that expressed by the Agency. Every product marketed by Iovate is evaluated during its development for the safety of its individual ingredients. Additionally, independent third-party experts from the leading independent scientific firm specializing in ingredient assessment, toxicology and product safety for the nutritional and pharmaceutical industry review the safety of Iovate’s ingredients and formulas before products are introduced in the marketplace. Only after this external review is completed does Iovate release a formula.
You know what I don’t understand is that the FDA will warn and recommend recalling of a product because of a few cases out of millions of users, but they do nothing about obviously unhealthy products such as cigarettes, which take a lot more lives that Hydroxycut ever will. Unnecessary risk? Seriously? Why has it taken me this long to realize that the FDA is totally ass-backwards? Below is a list of Hydroxycut products that have been recalled.
