Is a vaccine for the common cold on the way? That would make so many people happy. Not only would this lift a burden to normally healthy people that sometimes come down with the virus, but it would help ease others who have immune system problems that the common cold can often wreak havoc on and possibly prove fatal.
While a possible vaccine for the common cold virus is probably still pretty far off, scientist have mapped the genetic sequences of the virus. By knowing the blueprint of the various common cold viruses, they can try to determine what can deter the virus and predict what new forms the virus may take in the future.
Ann Palmenberg, of University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Institute for Molecular Virology and the lead author of the new study commented on the new findings at Medical News Today.
“We know a lot about the common cold virus,” Palmenberg explains, “but we didn’t know how their genomes encoded all that information. Now we do, and all kinds of new things are falling out.”
As of now, all we have are meds that can help relieve the symptoms of the common cold. The problem with taking these medicines is that they only cover up the problem and can even cover up other potential problems. I think everyone would love to see a real cure for the common cold. Life would be so much easier in so many ways.
