Sleep is a wonderful cure-all, a time to recharge your body’s batteries. Lack of sleep makes you cranky and irritable. But what if you can’t sleep because you are under a lot of stress? Just stay away from tranquilizers and sleeping pills because these won’t help you to get to sleep but will only interfere with your body’s already upset rhythms. So here are some tips:

•Warm milk can help you get to sleep. If you can’t digest milk, or don’t like it, the essential element that makes milk work as a sedative is L-Tryptophan, available over-the-counter in health food stores.

•Avoid strenuous exercise just before bedtime. This will not tire you out, but will stimulate your body and keep you awake.

•Take warm bath or shower to relax.

•If you are a heavy smoker, avoid smoking just before sleeping because nicotine is a stimulant.

•Try to clear your mind of your day’s problems and worries which can literally keep you up nights.

And, if you can’t sleep after a week or 10 days, it would be wise to consult your doctor.
