The FDA Has Their Priorities All Screwed Up

Posted May 07 2009 8:19pm

To say that the FDA has a lot to deal with these days is probably an understatement, however I think they have their priorities all screwed up. The recent recall of Hydroxycut kind of opened my eyes to that.

If you think about it, there are plenty of potentially harmful drugs and foods out there. Even things that aren’t really foods like, um, I don’t know, cigarettes, that are much more harmful than a weight loss supplement.

How does the FDA balance these issues? How do they deem what is right and wrong for consumers to buy and/or use? Cigarette smoking has been killing people for well over 100 years and alcohol can do quite the damage to the liver and has been since it’s birth and abuse. How do they not regulate these?

I’m not coming to Hydroxycut’s defense here, because I could honestly care less about their product, but how is a product that is used by millions with only a handful of potentially harmful results deemed unsafe, but others are not when they cause more harm or death than your typical act of genocide?

Understand that I’m not attacking users or manufacturers of alcohol and tobacco, I’m just saying that I think it’s pretty hypocritical for the FDA to regulate some things and not others. Here are some other potential risk food and drugs.

  • How about sugars? How much damage does processed sugars cause over time and consumption?
  • Caffeine? What about all the caffeine loaded products out there?
  • Acetaminophen? This causes liver damage over time and use.
  • Artificial sweeteners that have been known to cause cancer in rats. What about the handful of people that blame their cancer on artificial sweeteners? There’s a risk.
  • Pesticides and herbicides used on food products. How much of that stuff is canned with our food products?

The list could go on. I understand that the FDA ahs a lot to deal with but there are so many potential hazardous products on the market, how do they decide what to pull and what not to pull? Yes, I know I’m not the first to say this but maybe it needs to be said a little louder.
