Diabetes drug is effective in treating PCOS

My doctor told me I have polycystic ovary syndrome. Why did he prescribe a medicine used for the treatment of diabetes? The medicine is called metformin (Glucophage).

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a disorder that usually begins in the teenage years. Abnormal hormone levels lead to the formation of benign cysts on the ovaries. Hence, the name PCOS.

I am on 2000 mg of Metformin daily.

 It has helped tremendously!

 One down-fall is the diarrhea...ugh!

Metformin is only effective for PCOS women who have insulin resistance. You can have PCOS and not have insulin resistance. In such scenario, metformin is not required to treat your PCOS.
