Gender and age in weight loss

Trying to lose weight but frustrated that it is harder for you than a co-worker or family member with the same goal? It could be that there are other factors affecting your rate of weight loss.

If you are a female competing with a male for weight loss, in most cases your male challenger will have an easier time. This may not be because he is any more motivated, but it may come down to a case of physical differences between men and women. Muscle is the major burner of calories in the body. Because of genetics, male bodies have a higher percentage of muscle than women's. More muscle means more calories are burned, potentially leading to easier weight loss. Men also tend to be larger in size than women, so again have greater absolute muscle than a smaller-sized woman. A larger body requires more calories just to maintain it.
