Herbs rival Hormones as most popular Menopause Treatment

Herbal remedies are fast approaching hormone therapy as the most-favored treatment by women suffering from menopause symptoms, researchers here said.

Of nearly 800 women surveyed, 37% reported the use of hormone therapy to treat menopause symptoms while 31% reported using herbal remedies such as ginko biloba, ginseng, St. John's wort, or black cohosh, said Jun Ma, M.D., Ph.D., of Stanford.

Yes there is definitely increased interest in herbal alternatives however it is interesting to note that pharmaceutical sales which dropped by 70% after the 2002 WHI study are now back on the increase. The primary reason being that herbal alternatives often have only a 50% success rate in reducing menopausal symptoms versus HRT which is about 90%. Also the importance of hormones for heart, bone and mental health is also moving women towards hormones with the increased use of bio identical hormones. However there has also been some interesting new research on adaptogenic herbs which actually support the body's own production of hormones. The most successful of which was been on a product called Femmenessence which had an 84% success rate in reducing menopausal symptoms but as importantly improvements in hormone balance and resulting benefits in heart and bone health
