The Washington Child that Died from Neglect

Posted Apr 23 2009 5:23pm

I decided to stay up to watch the 11 news tonight and almost wish I hadn’t. The first story was about the woman from Washington State that neglected her two children because she was depressed. Her 3-year-old son’s health suffered, while her18-month-old daughter died from that neglect.

As the story unfolded, I could barely contain my anger at this monster mother and her horrific crime all in the name of depression. (If you haven't read this story yet, click here )

Now before I begin my rant, let me say that I understand how hard it is to be a month. I have a 20-month-old daughter that is so full of energy it’s exhausting just watching her run around. I’m also expecting my second child and the morning sickness has left me close to incapacitated some days. In addition, I suffer from depression, which I take medication for. But with all that in mind, my daughter always comes first. If I’m too ill to eat or fix dinner for myself, that doesn’t stop me from making sure that she eats and is well taken care of. When she was born, I was so worried about post-partum depression that I saw my doctor weekly and then bi-weekly as a check in system for both my daughter and I. I plan to do the same with my next child. Fortunately, things went well and the regular checks weren't really necessary. But my daughter’s health and safety came first and will always come first. I simply don’t believe in using depression as an excuse for abandoning responsibilities or neglecting children.

How could any human being use depression as an excuse for neglecting children? After this woman’s daughter became sick from the neglect, she refused to take her to the doctor for fear that he would see what was happening and take the girl away. Instead, she gave her baby girl and aspirin and left her alone in her room for two days! When she finally did check on her after the second day, the little girl was dead. Wouldn’t it make more sense as a parent to risk losing your child into the system while getting the help needed instead of killing her? Shouldn't you at least love your child enough to let her live?

If this woman isn’t given the death penalty for killing an innocent child and seriously harming her son, then I hope she spends life in prison. This woman should also be sterilized so that she can never have any more children to kill from neglect.

My heart breaks for the little girl who must have cried endlessly in her crib for food, water and a diaper change. How horrible must it have been for that child to die in utter neglect when all she must have wanted was the love, care and protection of the person she loved most in the world – her mother.
