
One of the keys to success in learning to do the splits is patient practice and one of the keys to flexibility will be to make sure your muscles are warmed up before stretching. As I recall from ballet class, a number of plies (deep knee bends) and other warm-up exercises were performed before anyone ever lifted a leg to the bar to stretch.
Then it was a gradual process of stretching - over and over and over again.
