Salute the Sun

Posted by C.L. R.

A great technique to get more flexible is to start the day with ten sun salutations. These are yoga moves that are designed to invigorate you, get your blood flowing and relax your body. If you work to stretch through the moves, your flexibility will definately increase. Start with your feet shoulder width apart and your hands at your side. Raise your arms to the ceiling and as you do so, take a deep breath. Exhale as you bring your arms down to the floor, without bending. Put your hands on the floor, breathe in and step back (as though to do a push-up) with your right leg. Breathe out and step out with your leg. Hold your breath for a moment in the plank form. Inhale as you go into Downward Dog, a yoga position where you stick your butt up while pushing down on your arms and your feet. You should feel the stretch in your lower calves. Breathe for two counts. Inhale, bringing your right leg forward. Exhale, bring the left forward. Inhale as you raise your arms back up as though to salute the sun. Rotating the order of your lunges, do ten reps and get ready for a fresh start to your day.

I've always meant to try this but *phew* if it's done right, the sun salutation is tiring. I don't know if I can do 11 of them in one session. I know because one of my yoga teacher had us practice it over and over to get each pose and movement just right, especially in relation to the positioning of our limbs. When we do it, however, we add in another move after down dog that stretches the body into cobra and works the triceps. Add proper breath placement to the mix and you've got quite a workout. Final relaxation starts looking pretty enchanting (it's used to be such a challenge for me to relax during that component of a yoga session) after doing sun salutations and its individual postures enough times!
