Why is it so expensive to eat well on campus?

Posted by Sarah A.

For the most part, I am able to bring my own lunch to work. For the days when I just don't wake up early enough to pack something, it is nearly impossible to find something to eat that is both satisfying, tastey, inexpensive, and not in HUGE portions.

Many overweight people have a very difficult time with portion control, and lemme tell you, most of the Stanford eating places definately don't help. I work in the Clark building, and it's a TERRIBLE temptation going into the cafeteria. Everything smells so good, and while many of their items are made from fresh food... they had Orange Chicken a few weeks ago, it it was literally McDonald's chicken nuggest smothered in a sticky "orange" sauce.

The salad bars are great, but if you add anything other then lettuce, the by-weight-price goes up astronomically! Suddenly you've just spent $12 on a salad!

I think is Stanford REALLY wants to help people loose weight and eat better, they should offer some sort of meal plan for staff and not just student body. Perhaps require all the on campus eateries to have available online the nutrition information for some of their staple items. If the University could somehow make it less expensive but still convenient for us to eat while we are working, I KNOW we would be a much more productive and healthy workforce.

Even off campus does not have any really healthy, affordable options. I've gotten to the point where one day a week I will drive to the grocery store (Whole Food, Trader Joes, and Safeway) and buy healthy snakes/meals for work there and store them in the fridge.

It is challenging to seek out the healthier food options, but it can be done. I must say that it is up to us to make our own personal decisions...it is not any restaurant or food services fault that they serve food that may be unhealthy....they are in business after all and this is what much of their paying customers want! Having said that.....any savvy diner can go to most any food outlets knowing that they can get dressing or sauce on the side or having chicken that is grilled, not fried for a healthy option. I know that U2 in Tresidder Union has lots of healthy options in their Twisted Sprout Salad area, the Grab and Go and the Chopstix Chinese station...Remember, take personal responsibilty for what you put into your body.....you can get the steamed chicken and lay off the fried chicken!!!!

I usually go to the dining halls to eat lunch- when I haven't brought my own. The price I think is pretty reasonable- 7 to 8 bucks a meal and it is served buffet style- so you have the choice to eat what you want. The cater to every one- the vegans- meat lovers- and those caught in between.

Because it is buffet style you do have to watch yourself. I have made most creative salads. I love the chuncky beets with oranges- delicisous.

Also if you purchase cardinal dollars your meal is only 5.00 to 6.00 bucks

Carla, you are the best! I could not have said it better!
The same goes for the Hospital's cafeteria. They have a great salad bar but charge .40 per OUNCE. I've seen so many people load up that plate, 1 of the 3 special entrees offered and then get sticker shock at the register. It's a good thing they take the major credit cards too. They do offer a meal plan where you can add money and get a 10% discount off your meals and drinks. Sarah, I'm in the same boat as you are.
I love going to the Nexus Cafe. The salad bar is superb. Try the sesame dressing. It's to die for. It's true that the salad bar can be quite expensive. Have you tried the salad from the grocery store? It's less than $4, and it already comes with dressing and condements. It's good! I like the Pacifica Salad and the Asian Salad.
