not even close to being an economic issue

Posted Oct 07 2008 7:06pm

i didn’t get my annual raise.

after the initial disappointment, the need to know increased. i looked over my evaluation and noticed that out of over 30 evaluation items, i got less than 10 items with a score of 4, and the rest were 3.

i will be lying if i say i was happy with that. at first, i thought the charge nurse wasn’t very objective. although i do not expect to get a 5, i really was expecting more 4s than 3s. my problem with getting 3s is that in my opinion, it’s simply saying “she’s not really bad, but she’s not good either.”

at first i disagreed with that idea because hey, i actually think i am doing a really good job. apparently, i’m not, and the sad part is, it’s only now that i found out. isn’t it funny or fascinating that people (like me) can get so blinded by lifting themselves up, that they do not see the real picture?

anyway, i found out from our new nurse manager that it’s not the evaluation score that caused the raise disappoitment since 3s are the acceptable scores. the reason i didn’t get the raise was because i have reached the ceiling hourly rate for my status. how that happened is beyond any logic, and doesn’t matter anymore, so i have ignored every advice to go to payroll to contest the possible error.

i just got hit in the head, and am now awake and know what i really am as a nurse in the eyes of other people. it was a difficult truth to face, but now that i have faced it, i know what to do.

involuntary enlightenment.
i think that’s the best way to describe this whole experience.
