Book review: Velva Jean Learns to Drive: A Novel ~ Jennifer Niven

Posted Jul 21 2009 10:09pm

Hmmmm, yet another debut novel. The summer seems full of first time writers, and yet it seems like it’s truly hard to find a really good first time novel to read and like. This one was good, and an easy read, but I felt like it seemed kind of on the cutesy side at first, and sometimes that’s a sure stop reading cue for me, but I decided to read on, and when I was done I was glad I stuck with it, as it turned out to be a good read. I must be honest, and say it did not blow me away, but I didn’t hate it either. It’s another set in the mining towns, and to me seems like a backwards country life, and poor girl does good and becomes someone. It has been done before, and it is predictable, but if you need a book to take along on a long ride or to the beach to fill in time, then this is a god book to bring. If you are looking to read a book to stimulate your mind and brain or to get in a really good read, then pass.
