Critter Control

We live in West LA and our lot is small by standards but very lush. The Mediterranean climate we live in makes it very easy to grow just about anything. So coming from the East Coast, I try to optimize every square inch of soil. We have a vegetable garden, we border our house with herbs and spices and have a very healthy lemon tree in the backyard. With all this abundant flora comes the fauna and lots of them. I expect this. Every night we seem to have a parade of cats and critters through our backyard. Opossums, squirrels, and raccoons are the usual suspects.

We live pretty close to a protected marshland so the critters in our neighborhood are particularly healthy and a bit aggressive. The raccoons are huge, the opossums are… well, they play possum (dead), it’s kinda cute. And the squirrels, I don’t pay much attention too. What concerns me is the fleas and ticks they bring with them (and leave behind), setting us up for lots of pests and potential Lyme disease. Bring in the racoon repellent.

I have stumbled upon some organic repellents that are a more humane way to deal with critters. The thinking is you’re not going to get rid of all the critters, you just want to  make your yard the least desirable on the block, so they leave you alone and pester someone else’s trash cans or garden.
