As most moms and dads know, parenting is a meditation on multi-tasking with an emphasis on efficiency. In my college years I was very organized - I had a Palm Pilot, I wrote everything down, I kept track of all my meetings, appointments and dates to remember.
Now that I’m a dad, it seems all those task tracking abilities have gone out the window. Organization is a pocketful of post-its slapped on the outside of my wallet or on my dashboard. By the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is take care of those forgotten emails and other things. Here’s a piece of voice recognition software, Dragon Naturally Speaking, that allows me to dictate my notes or emails (whatever) directly into the computer! The system is complete with system command prompts (to open files, save files, et al).
Dragon Naturally Speaking can be used with Blue Tooth noise cancellation microphones, can capture and transcribe your voice at 150 words/ minute, can even transcribe wav & mp3 files from a recording device. So basically, I can record that Madman mumbling I am prone to in the car and playback that recording to my computer for full dictation.
If you think about it, it’s a pretty cool idea considering you talk on average of one hundred and twenty words a minute and the average typist is forty to sixty words a minute (hunters and peckers like myself come in at much lower numbers). I wanted to know exactly how fast I am so I took their Dragon’s typing speed test! I came in at a mere 37 words per minute (with 100% accuracy). I wonder how it will transpose the tired mumblings of an overwrought dad?
