So I completely underestimated my child.
Yesterday was to be the day that we rid the entire house of every pacifier we owned. They were going into the trash, whether Cruz liked it or not. Well, he didn’t really know it was happening because he’s to young to understand yet, but regardless they were being thrown away!
We wanted to wait until we were home from San Diego to drop the habit. I wasn’t about to try to kick it while on vacation or right before. Selfishly, I wanted to sleep while we were gone. So yesterday morning I woke up and prepped myself for the day that lay before me.
And as nap time approached, I even told Jason that I felt bad taking it away from him. I stupidly felt like I was a being a bad mamma for taking something away from my little man that soothed him so. Now, of course I know this doesn’t make me a bad parent. Jason reminded me that he can’t have the ‘binkie’ his entire life and the older he gets the harder it’s going to be to take it away.
So he went down for his morning nap at about 9:30. And to him, everything seemed normal. Until I walked out of the room without giving him his binkie. He screamed. He cried. He fussed. And within 5 minutes it was over and he took a perfect nap!!
Trying not to get ahead of myself with excitement, I was SURE that the afternoon nap was going to be pure misery. I was sure that he was going to protest the whole time. He was going to declare that it was a nice little trick in the morning, but that he was NOT going to go without for the rest of the day.
To my complete surprise, he didn’t protest at all! He actually took a better nap than he did in the morning! I was still reluctant to shout from the rooftops that we were in fact, out of the woods with this whole pacifier weaning thing. But this far, he’d been totally ok with it!
Bedtime came. Everything was normal. I went through our routine and put him to bed- minus his binkie.
He slept for the entire night no problems. Actually, I think he slept even better than he ever did with it! He even woke up a little later. So much for stressing out about taking it away from him. He doesn’t miss it at all!
So I am proud and happy to say that we have kicked the habit- cold turkey- within 24 hours without too much of a fight from Mr. Cruz! He’s made his mamma so proud!
