China has swiftly reacted to the massive recall of Aqua Dots by banning further export of the toy, reports The New York Times . Meanwhile, at least seven more U.S. children have been reported sickened by a chemical coating on the toy beads, which brings the total injured in America up to nine.
Because the manufacturer was adding a precursor to the date-rape drug to the Aqua Dots, the Chinese government revoked the export license of Wangqi Product Factory in the southeastern Chinese city of Shenzhen. China’s action means that the popular toys will no longer be delivered to about 40 countries across Asia and Europe.
It seems Wangqi was using the industrial solvent Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate, because it makes the beads less sticky. It also is one-third the price of the approved chemical, reports the Times.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission upped the number of sick children to nine over the weekend. Children believed poisoned by the beads hail from Texas, Delaware, New Hampshire, Illinois and Utah, reports The Associated Press .
