This will be a first for me. Since I was of age all those years ago, I have only received a summons three times and they were all while living in this county in the last five years. I was excused the first time because Daniel was on continuous g-tube feedings at the time (try finding childcare for an infant and his kangaroo pump!). The second time I only had to call the courthouse automated number everyday twice a day for five days only to be told to call back again the next day and the next and the next and the next and the next until I was finally dismissed. But this time I have been ordered to report for duty.
I know, I know it is a privilege to serve and my civic duty and all that but I have to confess that I still don’t want to be there. I can think of a lot of other things that I could be doing…like finishing painting my bathroom, or painting Holly’s as I promised or shopping with Holly for baby girl things. My biggest complaint has to be that I have to be at the Stockton courthouse by 8 AM. I hate driving in downtown Stockton. I always manage to get lost. I once found myself in the middle of a take-down with three police officers with guns drawn after a scary-looking guy who also had a weapon. That’s what I get for pulling over to ask the nice, friendly officer for directions back to I-5 and my safe little hamlet. Perhaps I should drop some shiny stones along my path so I can find my way back to the Big Top.
It sucks to live in a county where the potential jury pool seems to be so small.
Okay, I’m done whining. Time to serve…with pride.
